This year’s X Factor has been one of the most successful talent quests in Australian TV history, producing a No. 1 album from winner Dami IM for her winner’s single “Alive”. Dami who later signed her contract with Sony Music Australia became number one on the ARIA Singles Chart which is the first by any X Factor Australia contestant in the history of the ARIA Charts.
Dami Im was born in South Korea and immigrated to Australia at the age of nine with her mother and younger brother. Dami’s father had to stay in South Korea to support the family but now her parents live together and spend part of the year in Australia and part in South Korea. Dami taught herself to sing by recording herself copying her favourite artists. At the age of 11, she began studying at the Young Conservatorium of Music program at Griffith University. Aside from singing, Dami is also a violinist and pianist. She was a national finalist in the Yamaha Youth Piano Competition, and won the Nora Baird Scholarship and the Queensland Piano Competition several times. In 2009, Dami graduated from the University of Queensland with first class honours in a Bachelor of Music. She subsequently completed a Masters of Arts degree in contemporary voice. Prior to entering The X Factor, Dami was a music and piano teacher.
