Coles mounts campaign to recognise unsung community heroes

Coles has mounted a major national campaign to recognise “unsung community heroes” in its supermarkets, Coles Express and liquor outlets across Australia.

As part of its 100th birthday as an Australian-owned company this year, Coles has launched the Coles Community Hero Awards to recognise team members who are passionate about their community, and help them to do more for their chosen cause.

Coles will award $400,000 in donations and prize money to more than 2300 local unsung heroes across Australia and allocate 30,000 hours – or the equivalent of 14 years’ in working days – so they can continue to help out their community organisations of choice during paid work.

Coles Director of Marketing and Store Development, Simon McDowell, said anyone – whether they are members of the public, from a non-profit organisation or from Coles – can nominate Coles team members from any Coles outlet for the Coles Community Hero Awards.

“In every town and suburb across Australia, we know we have team members who are quietly going above and beyond to help their community by volunteering their time before and after work to help out their chosen community organisation,” he said.

“Volunteering, fundraising and simply lending a hand is essential to the health of all communities so while these team members are not seeking recognition, we wanted to acknowledge their efforts and help them to continue their community work.”

The Awards will be run across different divisions – supermarkets, Coles Express sites, Coles Liquor stores, Distribution Centres, store support centres and Spirit Hotels.

In the supermarket category, a local winner will be selected in each Coles store to then go into regional finals. The regional winner will then automatically enter the state final and have a chance to be the overall national winner.

The national winner of all Coles supermarkets will receive a $20,000 donation to their chosen community organisation. The two runner’s up from Coles supermarkets will each receive a $10,000 donation for their chosen community organisation.

To nominate a Coles Community Hero, log onto https://colescommunityhero.com.au/ and tell us what they do and how it makes a difference in the community.

Nominations for the Coles supermarket team members close on 8 June, 2014. Supermarket store winners will then be announced on 30 June to become contenders for the Regional Awards.
